About METACOG
METACOG is developing infrastructure for the governance and study of AI-assisted professional work.
The underlying premise is simple: as AI becomes more capable, the important question is no longer only whether an AI system can produce a useful answer. Organisations also need to understand how AI was used, where human judgement remained authoritative, how conclusions were challenged, and whether work can be explained and defended afterwards.
METACOG approaches this as both a commercial governance problem and a research problem.
Commercial proposition
Governance for AI-assisted professional work
METACOG is being developed as a governance layer for organisations using AI in work where judgement, accountability and evidential integrity matter.
It is not intended to replace professional judgement or automate responsibility. Its purpose is to help organisations use AI while keeping human authority explicit and important decisions human-owned.
The commercial proposition centres on process assurance rather than AI performance.
METACOG is intended to help organisations establish clearer answers to questions such as:
- What role did AI play in producing this work?
- Where did human judgement remain authoritative?
- Were uncertainty and alternative interpretations appropriately considered?
- Can the development of an important conclusion or artefact be reconstructed?
- Can an organisation demonstrate that its own governance requirements were followed?
This positions METACOG alongside existing information security, data governance, professional assurance and AI-management controls rather than as an alternative to them.
Its focus is the part of AI governance that sits between access to an AI system and eventual reliance on its output: the governed use of AI within human knowledge work.
METACOG is currently under development. Commercial engagement is focused on organisations and professional environments where defensibility, accountability and responsible AI adoption are material concerns.
The METACOG assurance framework is currently being adapted for legal workflows, where it is intended to provide a traceable provenance and assurance record for AI-assisted legal work — including how human, AI-generated and source-derived material contributes to a relied-upon output, and the governed basis on which that work was produced.

Academic research proposition
A research platform for studying human–AI knowledge work
Most available evidence about artificial intelligence concerns models, outputs or completed interactions.
There is comparatively less empirical visibility into the process through which people and AI systems work together over time: how problems are framed, how reasoning develops, how uncertainty is handled, when challenge occurs, where reliance emerges, and how governance interventions affect behaviour.
METACOG is being developed so that this process can become an object of empirical study.
Subject to appropriate research design, ethics, privacy and governance arrangements, the platform may support investigation across areas including:
- human–AI interaction and collaborative reasoning;
- professional judgement under AI assistance;
- uncertainty, challenge and dissent;
- reliance and automation bias;
- provenance and evidential practice;
- cognitive and organisational effects of AI-supported work;
- effectiveness of governance interventions;
- differences between model capability and whole human–AI system performance;
- longitudinal changes in professional practice as AI use becomes normalised.
The research proposition is therefore not that METACOG already answers these questions.
It is that AI-assisted work needs better empirical observation if these questions are to be answered properly.
METACOG may provide researchers with a controlled environment in which aspects of that work can be studied prospectively rather than reconstructed only from final outputs.
Potential collaboration spans disciplines including human–computer interaction, cognitive science, science and technology studies, organisational research, AI governance, professional practice and related fields.
The commercial system and academic research programme have different objectives, but share a common concern: understanding how meaningful human authority can be preserved and evidenced as AI becomes increasingly embedded in knowledge work.
